RiverVest Managing Directors

Mark J. Mendel, Ph.D. - Managing Director

Mr. Mendel is a managing director and founder of RiverVest Venture Partners. He brings venture capital, medical research and product development experience to RiverVest and serves on the board of directors of Cydex, Inc., a RiverVest portfolio company.

Previously, Dr. Mendel was a vice president at ARCH Venture Partners. While there, he established New York City operations for ARCH, a seed and early-stage venture fund headquartered in Chicago, led the seed financing of Optobionics Corporation and served as board observer at Optobionics and at GenVec, Inc.

Dr. Mendel has worked in medical research at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as Massachusetts General Hospital. He also worked in product development at ALYX Medical, Inc., where he was part of a team that developed an automated physician's office blood chemistry analyzer, in manufacturing at Polaroid Corporation and in software development at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

A member of the Kauffman Fellow Charter Class, Dr. Mendel holds a Ph.D. and M.S.E. in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Cornell University.
