MIC is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that was established in 1984 with initial funding from the State of Missouri. Its purpose is regional economic development through formation and incubation of new ventures in the region.

MIC is a designated Innovation Center in the network of such centers recognized by Missouri's Department of Economic Development and overseen by the Missouri Technology Corporation.

MIC has an affiliation agreement with the University of Missouri-Columbia under which MIC operates as a complement to the Office of Technology & Special Projects and campus-wide Entrepreneurship programs.

At this time, MIC is housed on-campus in facilities of the College of Engineering. MIC plans to move into the proposed Technology Business Incubator when it becomes operator of that facility under its agreement with MU.
